FFXIV Mardi Gras Lore

The holiday of Mardi Gras represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

There's always been something different about the town of Bellevaux. Formerly nestled among marshes and bayous in the Coerthas Central Lowlands, the town's distance from Ishgard led its rather diverse residents to develop a culture of their own.Their dialect of Ishgardian began to take on other influences, until it sounded completely different to city folk. Their diets were comprised of what was found around them; shrimp, crawfish, and the like. The dishes became spicier and the music became bouncier. Their connection to the Fury frayed, but no one talks about that. This unique culture was almost wiped out in the Calamity, when the impact of Dalamud's shards altered the Coerthan climate to a perpetual winter. The marshes and bayous froze over; most of the local wildlife died out and were replaced by completely different species. And with the monumental loss of life, there seemed to be little to celebrate.Eventually, the town recovered. The growth of trade helped them return to, or at least adapt, their traditional cuisine. Mardi Gras took on a specifc role as a way of honoring what was lost in the Calamity--loved ones, but also homes and ways of life. It was a gathering of strength to keep moving forward and live well. It was color against a backdrop of white; warmth in an endless cold.Bellevaux had always kept its culture to itself, but thanks to various events and the interventions of many helpful outsiders, the town has decided to expand some of its Mardi Gras celebrations this year. There will be a parade and masquerade ball specifically for visitors, and House Bonvivant has called on its friends to help spread the holiday beyond Coerthas.

OOC Notes

This is a Final Fantasy XIV spin on the holiday of Mardi Gras as it is celebrated in New Orleans!

While many things are similar, some facets of Mardi Gras have been altered to better fit the game's lore. The holiday, which begins after Starlight and Heavensturn and ends on varying dates based on moon phases, is a celebration of the cycle of life in general, honoring those who once shared this life and have since moved on to their next. It's said that those since-passed souls can feel the love and joy for their memory as the townsfolk celebrate even in their new lives. While other cultures and locales refer to this season as "Carnival," in New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf South, the season is just called "Mardi Gras."Like in real life, there are parades, balls, and feasts. Bakers prepare many king cakes (which are never eaten beyond the actual Mardi Gras Day) and everyone decorates their houses in purple, gold, and green.Generally, anything non-religious that you might know or research about Mardi Gras holds true for the purposes of this RP. No, you cannot flash people on the parade route. Yes, you can take your drink with you.If you have any questions or ideas for this event or future iterations of it, please feel free to reach out.Laissez les bon temps rouler!
